
In a world of abundant wealth and resources, where enough food is produced to feed every individual, millions have suffered from hunger. Considered one of the most important issues for United Nations WFP (World Food Programme) and with the pursuit to solve world hunger in all its forms, in 2006, a campaign titled CatWALK THE WORLD –“Fashion for Food” was launched.
The international campaign consisted of high profile fashion shows across the world, starting off in Nigeria and followed to Accra, Ghana; Dubbed as the biggest fashion event, the glamourous affair featured a long list of high profile International and National Designers including Ozwald Boateng (Ghana), Deola Sagoe (Nigeria), Kofi Ansah (Ghana, Stoned Cherrie (South Africa), Atimeo, Sika (Ghana), and Kiki (Tanzania), amongst other.
Stepping onto the CatWALK with a strong posture suited for the designer trends were international supermodels such as the 1st Winner of the Nokia Face of Africa, Oluchi (Nigeria), former Miss World Agbani (Nigeria), Nokia Face of Africa runner-up Mirash (Ghana) and other models from the UK, South Africa, USA, Nigeria and Ghana. Each designer riveting, vivid talent shone through in Jan Malan, Umzingeli Productions, a leading show producer in Africa’s flawless fashion production.
With unprecedented media attention, the event saw attendance from South Africa’s prime media and business personalities, the likes of Lesley Mofokeng, Masechaba Khumalo, Sbu Leope and Noni Gasa. Also in attendance were international Damon Dash, a HIP-HOP entrepreneur and mogul, ex-footballer, Marcelle Desailly and jazz musician, Rhian Benson.
As if that was not enough to keep things going, the fashion for food campaign had other entertainment to celebrate the names who took part, a star-studded list including Basketmouth, Tic-Tac, King Ayisoba, K Antwi as well as A-list recording USA international artist MYA.
CatWALK THE WORLD created awareness and generated funds for millions of children suffering from hunger and hunger-related diseases.
